At IPI, Ryan was involved with the research and development of imaging techniques used to characterize the visual and physical aspects of photographs and digital prints. In 2006, he developed an online print characterization resource known as the Digital Sample Book. In 2009, he created the Graphics Atlas, which brings sophisticated print identification tools to archivists, curators, historians, collectors, conservators, educators, and the general public.
